CalcBloc is a set of free calculators for US paychecks and taxes. You can work out your take-home pay in any state, estimate your federal income tax and refund, see how much of a bonus you will actually receive, convert a salary to an hourly rate, and compare the same salary across all 50 states and DC.
Why we built it
Paycheck and tax calculators are everywhere, but most of them do not tell you where their numbers come from or when they were last checked. Tax figures change every year, and a calculator that quietly uses last year's brackets, or a rate copied from another website, gives a confident answer that is wrong.
CalcBloc takes a different approach: every figure is sourced, dated and tested.
- Official sources only. Every rate, bracket, threshold and deduction comes from the agency that sets it: the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Labor, a state revenue or labor department, or a city's finance office. We do not cite other calculator sites or encyclopedias.
- Sources you can check. Every calculator and state page lists the documents its numbers come from, with links and the date we retrieved them.
- Tested formulas. The calculations follow the agencies' own methods, such as the IRS percentage method employers use for withholding, and they are tested against the agencies' worked examples and hand-calculated cases.
- Honest about gaps. If we have not finished verifying a state's data for the year, its page says "data under review" instead of pretending otherwise.
The full process is on our methodology page.
Who it's for
CalcBloc is for anyone who wants to understand their pay:
- employees checking whether a paycheck looks right, or deciding what to put on a Form W-4;
- job seekers comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one, or an offer in another state;
- people planning a move and wondering what changes when a state has no income tax;
- anyone who got a bonus and wants to know where the rest of it went.
We explain the rules in plain English alongside the calculators. Our guide to how paycheck taxes work is a good place to start.
CalcBloc is not a payroll service, tax preparer or advisory firm. Our results are estimates to help you understand and plan. For decisions that depend on your specific situation, check with the IRS, your state's revenue department or a qualified tax professional. See our disclaimer.
Who makes CalcBloc
CalcBloc is written and maintained by the CalcBloc Editorial Team. We research each calculator from primary sources and build the data and tests ourselves. We do not claim professional credentials we do not have: our pages are not reviewed by a CPA or enrolled agent, and we say so rather than imply otherwise. How we write and check our content, including our use of AI tools, is described in our editorial policy.
How CalcBloc is funded
The calculators are free to use and do not require an account. We may show advertising in the future to cover our costs. Advertisers will never influence our data, our calculations or what we write.
