Withholding is not your final tax
Most of our calculators estimate withholding: the amounts an employer takes out of a paycheck using the official employer methods for the year. Withholding is a prepayment. Your actual federal, state and local income tax is determined when you file your returns, based on all of your income, deductions, credits and circumstances. The amount withheld from your pay can be more or less than the tax you owe.
Results depend on your inputs and our assumptions
Every result is an estimate based on the information you enter and on the assumptions listed in each calculator's "How it's calculated" section. Real paychecks and tax bills can differ because of factors we do not model, such as other income, benefits, the timing of pay during the year, your employer's payroll settings, multi-state work or changes in the law.
We work hard to keep our data accurate and current, and every figure is linked to an official source. But tax rules change, agencies revise their guidance, and mistakes can happen. Some states' data may be marked as under review while we verify it.
Check with the official source
Before you make a decision that depends on a tax figure, verify it with the agency that sets it:
- federal income tax and withholding: the IRS, including its Tax Withholding Estimator;
- state and local taxes: your state's department of revenue or taxation, or your local tax office;
- your own pay: your employer's payroll or HR department.
