  • Employee contributions for 2026: old age 6.90% up to the social security ceiling (€48,060 a year) plus 0.40%, AGIRC-ARRCO 3.15% (8.64% above the ceiling) plus CEG and CET, and CSG (9.20%) with CRDS (0.50%) on 98.25% of gross. There is no employee health or unemployment contribution.
  • Income tax uses the scale enacted for 2025 income (Finance Law 2026), with the household quotient (1 parts), its cap and the décote. The scale for 2026 income is in the draft 2027 budget (about 2.1% higher thresholds) and will be applied once enacted.
  • Withholding uses your personalised rate (tax ÷ taxable net). If you choose the neutral rate, your employer applies a standard grid instead and the difference is settled with your annual return.
  • Not included: employer-paid mutuelle and prévoyance (which add to taxable pay), overtime exemptions, Alsace-Moselle's extra 1.30%, and other household income.

How it's calculated

A French payslip starts from the gross salary (salaire brut), deducts the employee's social contributions to reach the net before income tax, then deducts income tax withheld at source. The calculator works through each step for the year and divides by 12.

Social contributions. For 2026 the employee pays old-age insurance of 6.90% up to the social security ceiling (€48,060 a year) and 0.40% on all pay, supplementary pension to AGIRC-ARRCO, and the CSG and CRDS on 98.25% of gross. There is no employee health or unemployment contribution.URSSAFAgirc-Arrco

Income tax. Tax is charged on the household's taxable income using the quotient familial: the income is divided by the number of parts, the progressive scale is applied to one part, and the result is multiplied back, with a cap on the benefit of extra parts and a reduction (décote) for small tax bills.DGFiP

The formula

  1. Employee contributions = old age (6.90% to the ceiling + 0.40%) + AGIRC-ARRCO (3.15% to the ceiling, 8.64% above) + CEG and CET + CSG (9.20%) and CRDS (0.50%) on 98.25% of gross
  2. Net social = gross − contributions; taxable net = net social + non-deductible CSG (2.40%) + CRDS
  3. Taxable income = taxable net − 10% for work expenses (min €509, max €14,555)
  4. Income tax = parts × scale(taxable income ÷ parts), with the scale 0% to €11,600, 11% to €29,579, 30% to €84,577, 41% to €181,917, 45% above; then the quotient cap and décote
  5. Net after tax = net social − income tax

Worked example

A single person earning €40,000 gross as a non-cadre pays €8,336 of employee contributions, leaving €2,639 a month before tax. Income tax for the year is €1,967, a withholding rate of 6%, so net pay after tax is €2,475 a month.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Income tax scale for 2025 income, the latest enacted (Finance Law 2026). The draft 2027 budget raises the thresholds by about 2.1% for 2026 income; the calculator will switch once that is law.
  • Salary is the household's only income; for couples, the other partner's income is not included.
  • Not included: employer-paid mutuelle and prévoyance, overtime exemptions, Alsace-Moselle's extra 1.30% health contribution, and tax credits such as childcare or home help.
FAQ

Questions people ask

How do you convert brut to net in France?

Take your gross salary (brut) and subtract the employee social contributions: old-age insurance, supplementary pension (AGIRC-ARRCO) and CSG and CRDS. That gives the net before income tax, often about three-quarters to four-fifths of gross for a non-cadre. Since 2019 income tax is then withheld at source, so your final net pay is lower again.

What is the difference between net social and taxable net?

Net social (net avant impôt) is what remains after all employee contributions. Taxable net is slightly higher because part of the CSG (2.40%) and the CRDS (0.50%) are not deductible for income tax. Your income tax is worked out on taxable net minus a 10% deduction for work expenses.

How does the quotient familial work?

Taxable income is divided by the number of household parts, the tax is worked out on one part and multiplied back. A single person has 1 part, a married or PACS couple 2, the first two children add half a part each and the third and later children a full part each. The advantage from extra parts is capped, at €1,807 per half-part for the 2025 income scale.

What is withholding at source (prélèvement à la source)?

Your employer deducts income tax from each payslip at a rate the tax administration sends it, based on your household's last return. You can choose an individualised rate within a couple or the neutral rate, which uses a standard grid. The difference between what is withheld and what you owe is settled after your annual return.

Do cadres pay more contributions?

Cadres and non-cadres now pay the same AGIRC-ARRCO rates; cadres only add a small APEC contribution of 0.024%. Cadres often have different supplementary insurance (prévoyance) arrangements, which can change net pay slightly. Above the social security ceiling of €48,060 a year, the AGIRC-ARRCO rate rises for everyone.
