How it's calculated

A Minijob (geringfügig entlohnte Beschäftigung) pays no more than €603 a month in 2026. The limit follows the minimum wage of €13.90 an hour: § 8 (1a) of the Fourth Book of the Social Code sets it at the minimum wage × 130 ÷ 3, rounded up to whole euros.Gesetze im Internet

Instead of normal contributions, a commercial employer pays flat rates to the Minijob-Zentrale:Minijob-Zentrale

  • health insurance 13%, only if the Minijobber has public health insurance;
  • pension insurance 15%;
  • a flat tax of 2% covering wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax, if the employer chooses it (§ 40a (2) EStG);
  • the U1 sick-pay levy of 0.8% (employers with up to 30 employees), the U2 maternity levy of 0.22% and the insolvency levy of 0.15%.

The Minijobber pays a pension top-up of 3.6% unless exempted on request.

The formula

  • Employer charges = pay × (health + pension + flat tax + U1 + U2 + insolvency levy), each item rounded to the cent.
  • Total employer cost = pay + employer charges.
  • Minijobber's net pay = pay − pension top-up (nothing else is deducted when the employer pays the flat tax).

Worked example

A Minijob at the 2026 limit, with public health insurance, the flat tax and no pension exemption:

Total employer cost€790.95€9,491.40

The employer pays €790.95 a month in total, and the Minijobber keeps €581.29. With the pension exemption the Minijobber keeps €603.00.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Commercial employers. Minijobs in private households have lower flat rates and are not modelled.
  • Regular pay within the limit. Above €603 a month the job is no longer a Minijob. Use the net salary calculator, which handles the Midijob transition range.
  • Not included: statutory accident insurance, which the employer's liability insurer bills separately. Also left out: short-term employment (kurzfristige Beschäftigung) and wage tax through the tax card when the employer does not pay the flat tax.
FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the Minijob limit in 2026?

A Minijob (geringfügig entlohnte Beschäftigung) may pay at most €603 a month in 2026. The limit is tied to the statutory minimum wage of €13.90 an hour: by law it is the minimum wage times 130, divided by three and rounded up to whole euros, which corresponds to ten hours a week. Above €603 a month the job becomes a Midijob in the transition range up to €2,000.

What does a Minijob cost the employer?

A commercial employer pays flat rates to the Minijob-Zentrale on top of the pay: 13% for health insurance if the Minijobber has public health insurance, 15% for pension insurance, a 2% flat tax if it chooses that, and the U1, U2 and insolvency levies of 0.8%, 0.22% and 0.15%. According to the Minijob-Zentrale this comes to at most 31.17% of the pay, plus accident insurance.

Do Minijobbers pay anything themselves?

Only a pension top-up of 3.6% of their pay, the difference between the employer's 15% and the full 18.6% pension rate. Minijobbers can ask their employer for an exemption, in which case nothing is deducted. There is no employee health, care or unemployment contribution, and with the employer's 2% flat tax no wage tax is withheld.

What is the 2% flat tax on a Minijob?

Under § 40a (2) of the Income Tax Act the employer can pay a single flat tax (einheitliche Pauschsteuer) of 2% of the Minijob pay. It covers wage tax, the solidarity surcharge and church tax, so the Minijobber does not need to give the employer a tax class. Alternatively the employer can withhold wage tax through the employee's tax card; this calculator does not compute that case.

Can I have a Minijob next to my main job?

Yes. Under § 8 (2) of the Fourth Book of the Social Code, one Minijob alongside a job with full social insurance is not added to the main job, so it keeps its Minijob status. A second or further Minijob, however, is added to the main job and becomes subject to normal contributions. Several Minijobs without a main job are added together and must stay within the €603 monthly limit in total.
