How it's calculated
German value added tax (Umsatzsteuer, usually called Mehrwertsteuer or MwSt) is charged as a percentage of the net price. The standard rate is 19% and the reduced rate is 7% (§ 12 of the VAT Act, UStG).Gesetze im Internet
- Add VAT (netto to brutto): VAT = net price × rate; gross price = net price + VAT.
- Remove VAT (brutto to netto): net price = gross price ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = gross price − net price.
Amounts are rounded to the cent. The table under the result shows the same amount at both rates.
Which rate applies
The reduced rate covers the goods listed in Annex 2 of the VAT Act, such as most food and printed books, and services named in § 12 (2). These include theatre, concert and museum tickets, local public transport and taxis within a municipality or up to 50 km, short-term accommodation, e-books and e-newspapers, and restaurant and catering services. Drinks served in a restaurant stay at the standard rate. Everything else is taxed at the standard rate.
Worked example
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Net price (netto) | €100.00 |
| VAT (Umsatzsteuer) at 19% | €19.00 |
| Gross price (brutto) | €119.00 |
A gross price of €119 contains €19.00 of VAT. At the reduced rate, €100 net becomes €107.00 gross.
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculator applies the rate you choose; it does not decide which rate a supply falls under. For a specific product, check Annex 2 of the VAT Act.
- Zero-rated supplies (§ 12 (3), such as certain solar installations), exempt supplies and the reverse charge procedure are not modelled.
- Rounding: each result is rounded to the cent. On an invoice with many items the VAT may be rounded per line or on the total, which can differ by a cent.
