How it's calculated

Every unit sold through Fulfilment by Amazon carries two main fees: a referral fee, charged as a percentage of the total sales price, and a fulfilment fee that depends on the product's size tier and shipping weight. The calculator takes VAT out of the selling price, deducts both fees, storage and your own costs, and shows the profit per unit, the margin and the price at which you would break even.

Fees come from Amazon's published EU rate card effective 1 July 2026, which covers Amazon.co.uk and the EU stores.Amazon The German fees are those for sellers in the Central Europe Programme. From 17 April 2026 Amazon adds a 1.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to fulfilment fees, which the calculator adds on top.

The formula

  1. Revenue = price ÷ (1 + VAT rate) for a VAT-registered seller
  2. Referral fee = category rate × total sales price (tiered where the category has tiers), at least the minimum per item
  3. Fulfilment fee = rate-card fee for the size tier × 1.015
  4. Profit = revenue − referral fee − fulfilment fee − storage − product cost − shipping to Amazon − other costs
  5. Margin = profit ÷ revenue; return = profit ÷ (product cost + shipping to Amazon)

Worked example

A kitchen product selling for £24.99 on Amazon.co.uk, in the small parcel tier up to 400 g, costing £6 to make and £1 to ship to Amazon, pays £3.75 in referral fee and £3.05 for fulfilment. After VAT and £0.10 of storage it makes £6.93 per unit, a margin of 33.3%. Below £14.85 it would lose money.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Non-peak fulfilment fees (15 January–14 October); peak fees are higher.
  • Standard-size tiers only. Oversize, low-price FBA, dangerous goods and clothing-specific rates are not included.
  • Furniture, jewellery and clothing have tiered referral fees not listed here; use "Everything else" as an approximation or check the rate card.
  • Advertising, returns and refunds belong in "other costs"; they often decide whether a product is profitable.
FAQ

Questions people ask

What fees does Amazon charge for FBA?

Two main fees per unit sold: a referral fee, a percentage of the total sales price that depends on the category, and a fulfilment fee for picking, packing and delivering the item, which depends on its size tier and weight. You also pay monthly storage fees for stock in Amazon's warehouses, and optional fees for services such as labelling or returns processing.

How is the Amazon referral fee calculated?

It is a percentage of the total price the customer pays, including VAT and any shipping charge. Some categories use tiers, with one rate on the part of the price up to a threshold and another above it; for example electronic accessories pay 15% on the first £100 and 8% on the rest. There is a minimum fee per item.

What is the FBA size tier of my product?

Amazon classifies each product by its packaged dimensions and weight into tiers such as light envelope, standard envelope, small parcel and standard parcel, with oversize tiers above them. For parcels, the shipping weight is the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight. Your Seller Central listing shows the tier Amazon has assigned.

Do I pay VAT on Amazon sales?

If you are VAT-registered, the price customers pay includes VAT that you pass to the tax authority, so your revenue is the price excluding VAT. Amazon also charges VAT on its own fees, which registered sellers can usually reclaim. Sellers storing stock in another country, for example through Pan-European FBA, need a VAT registration there.

Are FBA fees higher at Christmas?

Yes. Amazon charges higher peak-season fulfilment fees from mid-October to mid-January, and monthly storage costs about double from October to December. This calculator uses the non-peak fulfilment fees, so allow for higher costs on units sold in the peak season and for stock stored over the holidays.
