  • Uses the general rate. Zero-rated supplies such as basic groceries have no GST/HST, and some provinces tax certain goods at other PST rates or exempt them.
  • GST and PST are both worked out on the price before tax, so they are added together (Quebec's QST is charged on the price excluding GST).
  • The rate depends on where the supply is made (place of supply), usually where the goods are delivered or the service is performed.

How it's calculated

Sales tax in Canada depends on the province or territory where the sale is made (the place of supply). Some provinces combine their sales tax with the federal GST into one harmonized sales tax (HST); others charge GST and a separate provincial sales tax; the territories and Alberta charge GST only.Canada Revenue Agency

The formula

Adding tax to a price before tax:

  1. GST = price × GST rate (or HST = price × HST rate).
  2. PST, RST or QST = price × provincial rate. Each tax is charged on the price before tax, so they are not compounded. Quebec's QST is calculated on the selling price excluding the GST.
  3. Total = price + GST + PST (or price + HST). Each tax is rounded to the cent.

Removing tax from a tax-included total: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + combined rate), and the tax is the difference.

Worked example

$100 before tax costs $113.00 in Ontario, $114.98 in Quebec and $105.00 in Alberta.

Going the other way, a $113 receipt in Ontario is $100.00 before HST.

Assumptions and limitations

  • General rates only. Zero-rated supplies such as basic groceries are taxed at 0% everywhere, some goods and services are exempt, and provinces with their own sales tax set other rates or exemptions for some items. Check the rules for what you are buying or selling.
  • Place of supply. The rate is the one where the supply is made, usually where goods are delivered or a service is performed, not where the seller is based.
  • Rounding. Each tax is rounded to the cent on the total shown; a receipt that rounds item by item can differ by a cent or two.
FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the difference between GST and HST?

GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax charged across Canada. In Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, the federal and provincial sales taxes are combined into one harmonized sales tax, the HST, charged as a single rate. Elsewhere you pay GST plus a separate provincial tax (British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec) or GST alone (Alberta and the territories).

How do I calculate HST in Ontario?

Multiply the price before tax by Ontario's HST rate of 13% and add the result to the price. To find the price before tax from a total that already includes HST, divide the total by 1.13. The calculator does both: choose Add tax or Remove tax, enter the amount and pick Ontario.

How do I remove GST or HST from a total?

Divide the tax-included total by one plus the combined tax rate as a decimal, which gives the price before tax; the difference is the tax. For example, in a province with 15% HST you divide by 1.15. Where GST and a provincial sales tax both apply, add the two rates together first, because both are charged on the price before tax. Choose Remove tax in the calculator to do it automatically.

How is sales tax calculated in Quebec?

Quebec charges the 5% GST and the 9.975% Quebec sales tax (QST), both on the selling price before tax, for a combined 14.975%. The QST is not charged on top of the GST. Pick Quebec in the calculator to see the GST and QST shown separately.

Which rate do I charge when I sell to another province?

Generally the rate of the province or territory where the supply is made, which for goods is usually where they are delivered. A store in British Columbia that delivers to a customer in Ontario charges Ontario's HST, not BC's GST and PST. Place-of-supply rules for services and intangible property are more detailed; the CRA explains them in its GST/HST guidance.

Is everything taxed at these rates?

No. Zero-rated supplies, such as basic groceries, are taxed at 0% everywhere in Canada, and some supplies are exempt from GST/HST altogether. Provinces with their own sales tax also set exemptions and some different rates for particular goods. The calculator applies each province's general rate, so check the rules for the specific item.
