Arizona paycheck calculator
Arizona taxes income at one flat rate, and its withholding system is unusually simple: instead of allowances, you pick a percentage of your pay on Form A-4 and your employer withholds exactly that. If you never turn in the form, your employer withholds a default 2.0%.

How Arizona withholding works
Arizona does not use allowances or withholding tables. On Form A-4 you check one percentage, from 0.5% up to 3.5%, and your employer applies it to your gross taxable wages every payday. You can also ask for an extra dollar amount on top.
New employees have five days to turn in Form A-4. If they do not, the Department of Revenue requires the employer to withhold 2.0%, and this calculator uses that default. Because your actual tax depends on your deductions and credits, the percentage you choose may withhold more or less than you owe.
If you expect to owe no Arizona tax at all, you can elect a withholding percentage of zero. That election must be renewed with a new Form A-4 by February 15 each year, or your employer goes back to the default rate.
What counts as gross taxable wages
The percentage applies to the same wages that appear in box 1 of your federal W-2. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions, health premiums and HSA contributions through a cafeteria plan are left out, so they lower your Arizona withholding as well as your federal taxable wages.
The 2026 tax return: flat rate, standard deduction and credits
Your return uses a single flat rate on Arizona taxable income for every filing status. A 2026 law raised the standard deduction amounts starting with 2025 returns and lets people who take the standard deduction add their charitable gifts up to a cap. The Department of Revenue adjusts the standard deduction for inflation each year and had not yet published the 2026 figures when this page was reviewed.
The same law raised the dependent tax credit for children under 17 starting in 2026 and created subtractions for qualified tips, qualified overtime pay and seniors, beginning with 2025 returns. These lower your tax bill at filing time but do not change the percentage withheld from each paycheck.
No local income tax or employee payroll taxes
Arizona cities and counties do not tax wages. The Department of Economic Security also says state unemployment taxes cannot be withheld from employees' wages, so no unemployment deduction comes out of your pay.

Questions people ask
What is the Arizona state income tax rate in 2026?
Arizona has a flat 2.5% income tax rate for 2026. The same rate applies to every filing status and income level.
How much Arizona tax is withheld if I don't fill out Form A-4?
Your employer must withhold 2.0% of your gross taxable wages until you turn in a Form A-4 choosing a different percentage.
Which Arizona withholding percentage should I choose?
Form A-4 offers 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% and 3.5%. Since the tax rate is 2.5% of taxable income after deductions, many people with only wage income owe less than 2.5% of their gross pay; compare last year's Arizona tax with your wages to pick a rate.
Does Arizona tax bonuses differently?
No. Arizona has no separate bonus rate. A bonus is wages, so your employer withholds the same Form A-4 percentage from it as from your regular pay.
Do Arizona cities have an income tax?
No. Arizona cities and counties do not tax wages, so only state income tax withholding comes out of your paycheck for Arizona.
Can I stop Arizona withholding completely?
Only if you expect to owe no Arizona income tax for the year. You elect a zero percentage on Form A-4 and must renew it by February 15 of each following year.
