New York paycheck calculator
New York taxes wages with a graduated state income tax, and residents of New York City and Yonkers owe a second, local income tax that employers withhold from the same paycheck. For 2026 the state cut several of its lower bracket rates, so withholding tables changed for every payroll on or after January 1, 2026. Almost every New York paycheck also carries two small insurance deductions: disability benefits and Paid Family Leave.

How New York withholds income tax from wages
Employers follow the Tax Department's publication NYS-50-T-NYS. Most payroll systems use its exact calculation method: subtract a deduction allowance and a fixed amount for each allowance you claim, then apply the rate table for your pay frequency and marital status. Very high earners are moved to a separate top-income method that applies one flat rate to all wages.
Your allowances come from Form IT-2104, not the federal W-4. The worksheet counts one allowance per dependent and two more for a head of household with one job; expected credits such as the Empire State child credit or earned income credit add more. Single filers with one job and no dependents enter zero. If you never file an IT-2104, your employer may use zero allowances.
New York starts from federal withholding wages, so traditional 401(k) and 403(b) deferrals, Section 125 health premiums and cafeteria-plan HSA contributions all lower the wages New York withholds on. The higher-rate bands in the withholding tables reflect New York's benefit recapture, which phases out the lower brackets for high incomes.
New York City and Yonkers income taxes
If you live in one of the five boroughs, your employer also withholds New York City resident income tax using publication NYS-50-T-NYC. It has its own allowance amounts and a graduated table that is the same for single and married employees. The tax depends on where you live, not where you work: commuters who live outside the city do not pay it.
Yonkers residents pay a surcharge figured as a percentage of their New York State tax. Employers compute the state withholding and multiply it by the Yonkers factor. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere owe a separate nonresident earnings tax on wages earned there, which this calculator does not include.
Disability benefits and Paid Family Leave deductions
New York requires employers to carry disability benefits (DBL) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) insurance and lets them recover part of the cost from employees. The disability deduction is a percentage of wages capped at a few cents a week, so nearly every full-time worker hits the weekly cap.
The Paid Family Leave deduction is a percentage of gross wages with an annual maximum tied to the statewide average weekly wage. Employees earning less than that average contribute less than the cap. Some employers choose to pay these amounts for their workers; the calculator assumes the employee pays.
Bonuses and other supplemental pay
When a bonus is paid separately from regular wages, a New York employer can withhold state tax at a flat supplemental rate or add the bonus to the most recent regular paycheck and withhold on the total. New York City and Yonkers residents also have local tax withheld from the bonus at their own supplemental rates.

Questions people ask
What is the New York City income tax rate in 2026?
New York City's resident income tax is graduated, so the rate rises with income, and it is charged on top of New York State tax. Employers withhold it with the 2026 NYS-50-T-NYC tables; bonuses paid separately can be withheld at the city's flat 4.25% supplemental rate. Only city residents pay it.
How much is the New York Paid Family Leave deduction in 2026?
For 2026, employees contribute 0.432% of gross wages each pay period, up to an annual maximum of $411.91. If you earn less than the statewide average weekly wage, your yearly total will be below the cap.
What is the New York SDI deduction?
It is the Disability Benefits Law contribution: 0.5% of wages, but no more than $0.60 a week. Employers are allowed to collect it from employees but are not required to.
How are bonuses taxed in New York?
If your employer pays the bonus separately and already withholds from your regular pay, it can withhold New York State tax at a flat 11.70%. It can instead add the bonus to your regular paycheck and withhold on the combined amount. NYC and Yonkers residents also have local tax withheld.
Do 401(k) contributions reduce New York income tax withholding?
Yes. New York uses federal withholding wages, so traditional 401(k) and 403(b) deferrals, pre-tax health premiums and cafeteria-plan HSA contributions are not subject to New York withholding. Public employees' 414(h) retirement contributions are an exception that New York does tax.
How many allowances should I claim on Form IT-2104?
Single filers with one job and no dependents should claim zero. Otherwise the IT-2104 worksheet gives one allowance per dependent, two for a head of household with one job, and extra allowances for credits you expect to claim. Fewer allowances means more tax withheld.
