How Oklahoma withholds from your paycheck
Employers can use the Tax Commission's wage-bracket tables or its percentage formula; both give almost the same answer. With the formula, your employer subtracts a fixed amount for each allowance on your Form OK-W-4, then applies the Single or Married rate table for your pay frequency.
Oklahoma requires the result to be rounded to the nearest whole dollar, so your state withholding is always a round number.
Traditional 401(k) contributions, cafeteria-plan HSA contributions and pre-tax health premiums are not Oklahoma wages, so they lower your withholding.
Allowances on the OK-W-4
Claim one allowance for yourself, one for your spouse only if your spouse does not work, and one for each dependent. The form has Single and Married boxes plus a 'Married, but withhold at higher Single rate' option for two-earner couples; there is no head-of-household box, so heads of household are withheld as Single.
If you do not hand in an OK-W-4, your employer must withhold as if you were single with no allowances.
Brackets, deductions and future cuts
On your return, the first slice of taxable income is taxed at 0%, then 2.5%, 3.5% and 4.5%. Married couples filing jointly and heads of household use brackets twice as wide as single filers. Oklahoma's standard deduction is a fixed dollar amount set by state law, separate from the federal one.
The 2025 law also sets up automatic quarter-point rate cuts in later years whenever state revenue growth passes a threshold certified by the State Board of Equalization.
Bonuses
A bonus that is paid or listed separately can be withheld at Oklahoma's top rate for the year, or your employer can add it to a regular paycheck and withhold the difference. Bonuses lumped into regular pay without being separated are taxed as regular wages.
