Rhode Island paycheck calculator
Rhode Island uses one three-bracket income tax schedule for every filing status, with brackets, the standard deduction and exemptions adjusted for inflation each year. Withholding is just as uniform: one set of rate tables applies whether you are single or married. Rhode Island is also one of the few states where employees fund a temporary disability and caregiver insurance program through payroll deductions.

How Rhode Island withholds income tax
Employers subtract a small fixed amount for each allowance you claim on Form RI W-4 and apply the Division of Taxation's percentage-method table for your pay frequency. The same table is used for every filing status, so marriage changes your withholding only through the number of allowances.
Form RI W-4 has been required since 2020; employers cannot use the federal W-4 for Rhode Island. The worksheet gives one allowance for you, one for a spouse you can claim, and one for each dependent, up to ten. Very high earners lose the allowance altogether once pay for the period passes a set threshold.
Rhode Island withholding applies to wages that are subject to federal withholding, so traditional 401(k) contributions, pre-tax health premiums and cafeteria-plan HSA contributions reduce it.
Temporary Disability and Caregiver Insurance
Rhode Island's TDI program, which includes Temporary Caregiver Insurance for bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill family member, is paid entirely by employees. Your employer withholds a percentage of wages each paycheck until you reach the annual taxable wage base.
For 2026 the rate went down while the wage base went up, so most workers pay a little less and only higher earners pay more. Unemployment insurance in Rhode Island is paid by employers, not deducted from pay.
Bonuses and local taxes
A bonus paid separately can be withheld at Rhode Island's flat supplemental rate, which is the same as its top income tax rate. Your employer may instead add it to your last regular paycheck and withhold on the total.
Rhode Island cities and towns do not levy income taxes, so state withholding and TDI are the only Rhode Island deductions on a typical paycheck.
