PAYCHECK / 2026 / UTAH

Utah paycheck calculator

Utah taxes income at a single flat rate, and the Legislature cut that rate again for 2026, retroactive to January 1. Instead of allowances, Utah builds a phase-out allowance into its withholding schedules, so lower earners have little or nothing withheld while higher earners pay close to the flat rate on every dollar.

How Utah withholds income tax

Employers use the Tax Commission's Publication 14 schedules, with one column for single filers and one for married filers based on your federal W-4. Head of household filers use the single column. Your employer multiplies your Utah taxable wages for the period by the flat rate, then subtracts a base allowance that shrinks by 1.3% of wages above a set amount.

Utah works from your federal W-4 rather than a separate state form, and it ignores the allowances and dependents on the W-4: only your filing status matters.

Utah taxable wages are the wages subject to federal income tax withholding, so traditional 401(k) contributions, HSA contributions through a cafeteria plan and pre-tax health premiums lower your Utah withholding too.

The 2026 rate cut and mid-year table change

Senate Bill 60 lowered the individual income tax rate for 2026 and applies back to January 1, 2026. The Tax Commission issued new withholding schedules for pay periods beginning on or after June 1, 2026, so paychecks earlier in the year were figured at the old rate. This calculator uses the current schedules for the whole year.

The base allowance in the withholding schedules is what keeps tax off the first dollars of pay. Because it phases out at 1.3% of wages above a set amount, each extra dollar in that range is withheld at a higher combined rate until the allowance is used up.

Bonuses and local taxes

Utah does not publish a separate bonus rate. A bonus is added to that paycheck's wages and run through the same schedule, which for most employees means the flat rate on the bonus.

No Utah city or county taxes wages, so state income tax is the only state-level line on a Utah paycheck in this calculator.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the Utah income tax rate for 2026?

Utah's flat income tax rate is 4.45% for 2026, down from 4.5% in 2025. The cut applies to the whole 2026 tax year.

Does Utah have its own W-4 form?

No. Utah withholding uses the filing status on your federal W-4 and ignores the rest of it. Single and head of household filers use the single schedule, and married filers use the married schedule.

Why was more Utah tax taken from my paychecks earlier in 2026?

The rate cut was passed in 2026 and applies retroactively, but the new withholding schedules only took effect for pay periods starting on or after June 1, 2026. Any extra withheld earlier in the year comes back when you file.

How are bonuses taxed in Utah?

Utah has no special bonus rate. The bonus is added to your regular pay for that period and withheld using the normal schedule, which is usually the 4.45% flat rate on the bonus.

Do Utah cities have income taxes?

No. Utah cities and counties do not tax wages, so you only see state income tax withholding for Utah on your paycheck.
