Price including GST

$115.00

$100.00 + $15.00 GST

$15.00
Price excluding GST
$100.00
  • GST = price × 15%. Inland Revenue: multiply the GST-exclusive amount by 0.15.
  • Businesses must register for GST when turnover is over, or expected to go over, $60,000 in 12 months. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) or exempt.

How it's calculated

New Zealand GST is charged at 15% on most goods and services sold by GST-registered businesses, and on most imported goods.Inland Revenue

  • Adding GST. Multiply the price before GST by 15% to get the GST, then add it on.
  • Removing GST. If a price already includes GST, multiply it by 3 and divide by 23 to find the GST inside it, then subtract that to get the price before GST. Inland Revenue calls 3/23 the tax fraction and says this method always gives an accurate answer.Inland Revenue

The formula

  • Add GST: GST = price × 0.15; price including GST = price + GST.
  • Remove GST: GST = price including GST × 3 ÷ 23; price excluding GST = price including GST − GST.

3/23 works because a GST-inclusive price is 115% of the original, and 15 ÷ 115 = 3 ÷ 23. Dividing the GST-inclusive price by 1.15 gives the same price excluding GST. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent.

Worked example

Inland Revenue's own example: headphones at $100 before GST carry $15.00 of GST, for $115.00 including GST.Inland Revenue

Assumptions and limitations

  • Standard-rated supplies only. Exports and some other supplies are zero-rated (0%), and some are exempt from GST, such as residential rent and many financial services.
  • Registration. You must register for GST if your turnover was over, or is expected to go over, $60,000 in 12 months. Below that, registering is optional.
  • Your GST return is worked out on your total sales and purchases for the period, with adjustments; this calculator works on a single amount.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How do I add GST to a price in New Zealand?

Multiply the price before GST by 0.15 to get the GST, then add it to the price. Multiplying the price by 1.15 gives the GST-inclusive total in one step. Inland Revenue's example is headphones priced at $100 before GST: the GST is $15 and the price including GST is $115.

How do I work out the GST in a GST-inclusive price?

Multiply the GST-inclusive price by 3, then divide by 23. That gives the GST part of the price; subtract it to get the price before GST. Inland Revenue calls 3/23 the tax fraction and recommends it because it is always accurate. Dividing the price by 1.15 gives the same price before GST.

Why is the GST fraction 3/23 and not 15%?

A GST-inclusive price is 115% of the price before GST, so the GST is 15/115 of the total, which simplifies to 3/23. Taking 15% of a GST-inclusive price would overstate the GST, because it would charge GST on the GST. That is why removing GST uses the fraction while adding GST uses 15%.

When does a business have to register for GST?

A business must register when its turnover over the last 12 months was more than $60,000, or is expected to go over $60,000 in the next 12 months. Businesses below that can choose to register, which lets them claim GST on their business purchases but means they must charge GST and file returns.

Is GST charged on everything?

No. GST applies to most goods and services supplied by registered businesses, but some supplies are zero-rated, such as most exports, and some are exempt, such as residential rent and many financial services. Sales by people who are not registered for GST also carry no GST. Check Inland Revenue's guidance if you are unsure about a supply.
