  • Customer (logo) churn = customers lost ÷ customers at the start. Gross revenue churn = (churned + contraction MRR) ÷ starting MRR. Net revenue churn subtracts expansion, so it can be negative when upgrades outweigh losses.
  • Gross revenue retention (GRR) = 1 − gross revenue churn and can never exceed 100%. Net revenue retention (NRR) = (starting MRR − churn − contraction + expansion) ÷ starting MRR. New customers are left out of both.
  • Yearly figures assume this month's rates repeat: annual churn = 1 − (1 − monthly churn)^12, annual NRR = monthly NRR^12. Public companies usually report NRR on a trailing 12-month cohort instead.

How it's calculated

Churn measures how much of your existing business you lose over a period. There are two kinds, and they can tell different stories:

  • Customer (logo) churn counts customers: how many of those you had at the start cancelled.
  • Revenue churn counts recurring revenue: the MRR lost to cancellations and downgrades, as a share of the MRR you started with.

These are the definitions David Skok set out in his widely used SaaS metrics guide: customer churn = customers who churned ÷ total customers, MRR churn = churned MRR ÷ previous month's MRR, and net MRR churn subtracts expansion MRR.David Skok, For Entrepreneurs Zoom reports its online churn the same way, as the MRR of customers who cancelled or downgraded in a quarter divided by the starting MRR, then divided by three for a monthly figure.SEC (EDGAR)

The formula

  1. Customer churn = customers lost ÷ customers at the start
  2. Gross revenue churn = (churned MRR + contraction MRR) ÷ starting MRR
  3. Net revenue churn = (churned + contraction − expansion) ÷ starting MRR
  4. Gross revenue retention = 1 − gross revenue churn; net revenue retention = 1 − net revenue churn
  5. Annualised churn = 1 − (1 − period churn)periods per year

Worked example

Losing 20 of 1,000 customers in a month is 2% monthly churn, which compounds to 21.5% a year, not 24%. With $100,000 of starting MRR, $3,000 lost to cancellations and downgrades and $4,000 of upgrades, net revenue churn is -1%: upgrades more than replace what was lost.

Assumptions and limitations

  • New customers are excluded from both the numerator and denominator, so churn reflects only the customers you started with.
  • Annualising assumes the rate repeats. Churn usually falls as customers age, so a young company's annualised figure can overstate long-run churn.
  • Blended rates hide differences between plans and customer sizes; calculate churn per segment where you can.
FAQ

Questions people ask

How do you calculate churn rate?

Customer churn rate is the number of customers who cancelled during a period divided by the number of customers at the start of it. Losing 20 of 1,000 customers in a month is 2% monthly churn. New customers who join during the period are left out of both numbers, so the rate reflects how well you keep existing customers.

How do you convert monthly churn to annual churn?

Do not multiply by 12. If a share c of customers leaves every month, the share remaining after a year is (1 − c) to the power 12, so annual churn is 1 − (1 − c)^12. A 2% monthly churn is about 21.5% a year, not 24%, because each month's churn applies to a smaller base.

What is the difference between customer churn and revenue churn?

Customer, or logo, churn counts customers lost. Revenue churn measures the recurring revenue lost, including downgrades. They differ when large and small customers churn at different rates: losing a few big accounts can mean low customer churn but high revenue churn. Net revenue churn also subtracts expansion revenue and can be negative.

What is negative churn?

Negative net revenue churn means upgrades, add-ons and price increases from existing customers outweigh the revenue lost to cancellations and downgrades, so revenue from the customers you started with grows even without new sales. It is the same as net revenue retention above 100%.

What is a good churn rate for SaaS?

It depends on who you sell to. Businesses selling to small companies or consumers on monthly plans typically see much higher churn than those selling annual contracts to large enterprises. Rather than chase a universal benchmark, compare your churn by customer segment and plan, and track how it changes over time and with your cohorts.
